The Streets of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay

Shopping in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay

When you are in the area around the Iguazú Waterfalls, you might want to give your bank account a little shock with a little shopping in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay.

Getting there is easy. We took a direct bus from the bus terminal in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina ($5 Pesos argentinos, one way, leaving every hour) and just had to get off and on the bus again at the Argentine border (don’t forget your passport!). There was no stop at the border in Brazil, nor in Paraguay.

When we arrived in Ciudad del Este we couldn’t really believe it. It was buzzing! Buses going up and down the road, together with private transport, motorbike, taxis etc. Then there were all the busy stalls along the road offering shoes, clothes as well as the bigger shopping malls with electronic items, perfumes, make-up and anything else you can think of basically.

The positive thing: You don’t need to worry about the currency. Argentine Pesos, Brazilian Reais and US dollars are accepted in the streets and the shopping centres with the malls accepting credit cards as well.

Now to the prices: After my return I found out that the digital camera I bought was about the same price as can be found on Amazon in Germany…. but the make-up for example from Revlon or Mac, was MUCH cheaper! I also kept my eyes open for a new hand bag, but I realized there were much better deals in Chile!
So, if you are looking for something in particular, check the prices first. There are definitely bargains, but some items might have the same (or lower!) price in your home countries.

Have you been to Ciudad del Este in Paraguay?
