9 Expat blogs from Chile you should read

Escuela Militar at Sunset

Updated September 2015 – Removed blogs that no longer post or have left the country (not that I can speak):

If you are coming to Chile, or have just arrived, then you may want to learn from the experiences of other foreigners that have already been living here a while. One of the ways of doing this is by delving into the blogs of expats in Chile. Even if you are an expat yourself, you may want to check them out (though I’m sure you already do). Interestingly the nine authors are women.

This list of expat blogs from Chile is in no particular order…

Bearshapedsphere – Santiago
Eileen Smith with her descriptive writing accompanied by great photos of random things encountered on her adventures. She also gives insights from off the beaten track. Never a dull moment on her blog!

Cachando Chile – Santiago
Margaret Snook is a North American anthropologist who came to Chile in 1991 for a 6 week pre-research visit and ended up staying forever. She lives with her Chilean husband in Santiago, where she writes about wine & food and edits, translates, and photographs just about anything she can get her hands on.

Eat Wine Blog – Santiago
Liz Cazkey a chef, sommelier, food/wine writer, cookbook author, and entrepreneur shares culinary and wine experiences from Chile.

Don’t call me gringa – Santiago
Emily tells stories about the sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating things that happen in Chile. Married to a Chilean, she has been living in Chile since 2007.

The Thorny Rose – Santiago
Sally and her experiences being a volunteer English Teacher in Chile.

Querida Recoleta – Expat Blog – Santiago
From England but having lived in New Zealand her whole life, in 2012 Helen followed her heart to South America, where she now lives with her partner and son. She lives in Recoleta which has become a true home for her, hence the name of this blog.

Just smile and nod – Valparaiso
Finally someone from outside of Santiago!

Snail on a leash – Iquique
Alicia documents her life in the north of Chile and also shares her encounters with Chilean Spanish.

Our Chilean Adventure – South of Chile
Living on their own farm in the South of Chile.

BONUS TRACKS…

When I originally wrote this post, there were 9 blogs I was following. Now that there are a lot more foreigners in Chile, there are also more blogs. Here are some more you can check out:

Tarweed Spirit – A native Californian that moved to Santiago, Chile in 1972 to marry her Chilean boyfriend. Two sons and four grandchildren later, She is a retired teacher that spends her hours writing, tree hugging, bird watching, talking to stray dogs, fighting an endless battle with garden weeds and noticing little things in life and the Earth that fill her with wonder.

A Blog that gets updated once in a blue moon though I thought I’d mention anyway:

Chilean Adventures of the Pelirroja Peligrosa – Santiago
Great for learning common Chilean expressions (and slang) and about general life in Chile.

I do have more expat blogs from Chile in my RSS reader though I haven’t included them. Mainly because they’re either heading back to their home country soon or will soon be inactive for other reasons.

Are there any expat blogs in Chile that I’m missing that you recommend?
If you have one, then let me know in the comments or on twitter.

      Hi,
Thanks for letting us know about the blog. The last post about making jewellery from (the absolute) beginning with nuggets to the very end was interesting.
Where are you originally from and what took you to Osorno?
      Saludos,
      Rob.

Thanks for this post — I’ve added the bogs you mentioned to my RSS reader. We are now living in Hue, Vietnam and I’m strongly considering having us spend the next winter in Chile.

My wife is from Vietnam and I’m curious — Are there many Vietnamese restaurants in Chile?

It depends on your lifestyle though in general that amount should be fine.

  12. Alicia Briscoe February 8, 2013 at 9:18 pm #

I know that this is an old post but if you want to update and add a blog from Northern Chile, I’ve been living and teaching English in Iquique for about a year and documenting my adventures at snailonaleash.blogspot.com. Also, just wanted to say thanks for your blog. It was a good resource when I was researching and preparing to make the move down to Chile. Saludos!

    Hi Rob
We are a family with 3 children living on Lago Llanquihue in the lakes district.
I have been blogging for family since last july but recently went public.
We’d love it if you would include our blog on your list.
We blog regularly about our adventures and other details of becoming residents and how we are getting our container here and ,of course, all the natural beauty around us with great photos!
    Thanks
    Lori
