Oktoberfest in Germany also celebrates 200 years

In the same year that Chile celebrates its 200 years, the largest beer festival in the world also celebrates its 200th anniversary. Yes, it all started back in 1810 with the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria with Teresa of Saxony-Hildeburgskou. The Prince was so happy that he invited the whole city to celebrate over five days. In the following years the festival was repeated and this celebration has survived to this day.

The Oktoberfest in Munich

The Oktoberfest festival normally lasts 16 days and ends on the first Sunday in October. If, however, that Sunday is on the 1st or 2nd of October, the festival continues is extended to the 3rd of October which is Germany’s national day. Every year more than 6 million visitors from around the world participate and last year in a little over two weeks they consumed 30% of the annual production of the Bavarian brewers, 880 roasted oxen, 219,443 pairs of sausages and 459,279 roast chickens. It is interesting how it employs more than 12,000 people of which 1600 are waitresses.

This year (2010) the Oktoberfest takes place from the 18th of September to the 3rd of October. Due to it being a significant anniversary, there will be as special historic tent with 850 seats.

A group of us went to this beer festival last year and we had a great time. The place is HUGE with lots of stands not just offering beer but all types of stuff including handicrafts.

There are so many varieties of beer on offer that I am sure it is more than the 150 types they mention. I even bought a six-pack of New Zealand Beer at the event, how random is that! Of course I savoured them and made them last months. Funny side point – I had my last bottle of that NZ beer the night of the Feb 27th Earthquake and the weird thing is that it was sitting on the kitchen bench and the tall thin bottle never fell over with the shaking. Anyway…

I recommend this even if you aren’t a beer drinking just for the ambience, the music and other entertainment (there were guys dressed up in Medieval gear, swords and all). If it’s a sunny day, take a hat and sun protection because it gets really hot out there.

Ohhhh, yes, I remember, I had a great time too. Was a very sunny day, but be there with friends was amazing. Of course this year I´m going too, it is like a necessary tradition. So I hope, see you there again.
